iPhone Tricks; How To Fix iPhone Wi-Fi Connectivity Issue After Upgrading To iOS 5






Engadget reported few days back that some users had Wi-Fi connectivity problems after upgrading to iOS 5 or iOS 5.0.1. Based on this discussion thread, seems to affect iPhone 4S, 4S iPhone, iPhone 3G, even iPads and iPod touch users.

This is not the first time that iOS device users Wi-Fi connectivity problems after upgrading to the latest IOS 5/iOS 5.0.1 software update. Users have reported similar problems with Wi-Fi connectivity after upgrading to iOS 3.x and 4.x IOS software update too.

If you face any of these problems, you can use the following tips to see if any of them resolves the problem until Apple releases an IOS software update to solve the problem:

Basic Troubleshooting:

  • Start Settings app
  • Tap Wi-Fi
  • Turn off Wi-Fi off and then on again


Renew IP address:

If this fails, try the IP address, which may be required if you use a larger wireless network refresh.

  • Start Settings app
  • Tap the Wi-Fi network you can connect from the list
  • Scroll down and tap the Renew Lease

Forget this Network:

If renewing IP address not resolved, try setting up a new connection to the Wi-Fi network using the Forget this Network option. Please note that this will be your current Wi-Fi network settings to delete including stored WiFi passwords.

  • Start Settings app
  • Tap the Wi-Fi network you can connect from the list
  • Tap the Forget this Network
  • You will be prompted with the message that your IOS device automatically stops participating in this network. Tap the Forget.
  • Return to the list of Wi-Fi networks, try to locate and retrieve the Wi-Fi network.


If this does not help try restarting iOS device.

Restart IOS device:

  • Press and hold the Sleep / Wake button until "slide to power off" slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider and iOS device after a few moments.
  • Switch IOS device by keeping the Sleep / Wake button until the Apple logo appears.


Reset Network Settings:
If restarting your iOS device does not solve the problem again all network settings. Please note that this will be your current mobile and Wi-Fi network settings registered, including saved networks, Wi-Fi passwords and VPN settings.

  • Start Settings app
  • Tap General
  • Scroll to the bottom of the screen and touch Reset
  • Tap Reset Network Settings
  • When the machine restarts, try to locate and retrieve the Wi-Fi network.
